Journey of A Surrogate
When my husband and I met and started dating seriously, I told him of my desire to have a child. I told him that I might not ever have children. And I told him that if I did have my own children and my endo was reversed by the surgery, then I wanted to be a surrogate for those who were not so fortunate. He knew then that I wanted to become a mother, and then a surrogate mother, someday.
When we decided to try for our first child, we sought out a reproductive specialist. We found a great doctor who worked with us and monitored our progress toward pregnancy. I had an ultrasound each month to assure that no new spots had showed up and that the lining of my uterus was sufficient. Then my husband and I would perfect our baby making skills and I'd return for a beta pregnancy test.
I remember cheating and going to the pharmacy to buy a home pregnancy test instead of waiting for the beta results. I'd take the test and sit there and stare at it for the two minutes it took until I could read the test. I remember willing that second line to appear and being so disappointed when it didn't. After three months of working with the doctor, we were out of money and out of patience. We were starting to rethink our goals of becoming parents and decided to take a break from the baby making game. The very next month, I was late to start my period. I was only late by a day. I knew there was no way I could be pregnant since the doctor was not helping us, so I didn't worry.
Another week passed. I was still late. I took a home pregnancy test, just on a lark. I stared at the test and stared. The dye moved across the result window...one pink line....two pink lines. TWO pink lines!? I jumped up and down and proceded to make my poor husband drive me to the store in the middle of the night to buy another test, just to make sure this one wasn't a fluke. He bought one of every kind on the shelf and brought them back to me. I took another test...positive. I took another one after that...positive. I went to bed. *Explanation of Photos for this Entry:
